Padre and Mustang Island

Making forts in the car!

We took a trip in August to the Texas coast and spent a week in a condo on Mustang and Padre Islands. Above are pictures of the travel portion of our trip - 10 hours in a car with 4 kids (13 hours including stops) and... wait for it..... NO ELECTRONICS! (The trip back took 15 hours because we went sightseeing thought Houston). Dare to resist the DVD player! Chuck that DSi! The kids did really well. As we entered the coast area, refineries (in the picture right above) began appearing. Gave me a spooky feeling, for some reason. The coast was developed Texas style - that is with a complete disregard for basic city planning, making the cities ugly, to be frank. But the kids loved the palm trees and there were pockets that were delightful. And the beaches were heavenly! Below are some pictures of the condo we stayed in. It had a sort of 80s beach decor that the kids didn't seem to mind.

Outside of the condo we had direct access to the water. The kids fished from the dock using shrimp and bait and Isak caught many fish. he let them all go.

 We decided to have a picnic dinner on the beach one day.

 The kids loved it, but we soon learned that we must have distinguished ourselves as tourists big time. 

We soon gathered a substantial fan club:

 Oodles of completely unafraid seagulls gathered near us. We chased them away (even Julia growled at clapped her hands as she raced after them), but they returned within 30 seconds. So we ate and then packed up the food and put it in the car. That seemed to do the trick.

 Our condo complex had a club house by the pool. We did our homework here because there was on internet connection in the condo, only here. They had a fort for the kids to play in, too.

 The sting rays were SO tame and SO fun! 

They kept splashing and playing with the kids.

Because school had started the week we were there, we virtually alone in the Aquariaum.

It was awesome!

Like I said, the cities were ugly to me, but I confess I have NEVER been to beaches as nice as this in my life.

And I have been to quite a few. 

They had smooth, packed sand, very shallow and endless... The water was clear.

I am so glad the kids had these beaches as their first experience with the ocean.

Nåt mer från sommarlovet (Hästar och Pinewood Derby)

Dessa bilderna har suttit på kamerans minne hela sommaren, och inte på nåt minneskort, så jag har inte kunnat stoppa in dem i kortläsaren så där smidigt.

Först kommer här lite fler hästbilder, och sedan bilder från Pinewood Derby som både Isak och Elina var med i, i år. Elinas bil kom på fjärde plats av bland omkring omkring 35 bilar. Hon var nöjd. Isaks var lite obalanserad och spårade ur första loppet. Otur, men han tog det rätt bra ändå.

Första skoldagen...

...för Julia!!  Bakom detta intetsägande staket ligger en låg byggnad med 37 elever - 17 stycken 3 åringar och 20 stycken 4 åringar, i varsina avdelningar. Varje åldersgrupp har 2 lärare.

Om man öppnar grinden där, och tar till höger genast, kommer man hit (se nedan). Och här står hon, 3 åringen som inte är som de andra barnen var när de var 3 år. Hon är superredo att börja skolan. I handen håller hon sin påse med extra kläder. Bakom henne ser man skolans lekplats.

 Storasyster Anja, som inte börjar skolan förrän i morgon borstade inte håret i morse. Heh.

Väl inne i skolan har 3 åringarna 2 stycken rum. Ett som de har samling i och äter frukost i (borden syns inte på denna bild).

Vi stannade och pusslade med Julia. En av pojkarna som just lämnats av, skrek nåt fruktansvärt, stackarn. Han var tydligen INTE redo... Det gjorde flera av barnen oroliga, inklusive Julia. Men efter ett par minuter ignorerade hon hans skrik. Jag förklarade att han ville ha sin mamma och att hon inte behövde bry sig om honom. Och det funkade på detta barnet! (De är ju alla olika, som sagt. Specielt olik är Julia.)

Efter frukosten går barnen in här ("lekrummet" kallar Julia det). Skolan är inte speciellt "fancy" men Julia älskade den vid första besöket under sommaren. Innan Mark och jag visste säkert om detta skulle bli av, så hade Julia bestämt sig. Hon kände till och med igen staketet när vi åkte dit och lämnade ansökan. "Varför åker du till min skola, mamma?" frågade hon då.

Jag känner mig så otroligt lättad inombords, men samtidigt ledsen i mammahjärtat. Julia ska vara här en halv dag. Men det är första gången sedan jag blev mamma som jag inte har barn hemma, och det är ändå 5 dagar i veckan. Innan jag började skolan behövde jag ju inte ha dem hemifrån, men sedan jag själv började min utbildning har det inte varit så lite jobbigt att balansera föräldraskap med studier. Nu kommer jag ha tid att göra allt skolrelaterat medan Julia är borta, och även hinna med att handla och städa lite hemma och sedan vara fokuserad och närvarande när hon kommer hem. Jag kommer även kunna hjälpa till lite då och då i de större barnens klassrum och veta vad som händer där. Jag tror jag kommer få mer sömn som följd också, och inte behöva sitta uppe till småtimmarna med skolarbete. Känns som om hela familjen kommer dra fördel av detta.

I Am Officially an Author!

I have held the book in my hand! It is just a little thing, but it is mine! The official release date is August 14th, so local Barnes & Noble stores will put their copies out on that day. I think only B& N in Oklahoma will carry hard copies. But any one of their stores can order it, so if you live in other parts of the country - by all means call down and tell them to get a few copies! Amazon.com is the easiest place to get it. If all my friends order a copy it might double the number of copies sold and I might earn enough money to cover what I spent on childcare to write this thing. Ha!

Nevertheless it is an accomplishment and a dream I have had since was 5, to write a book. And now I have!

Express Ranch

One of our favorite places to go is the Express Ranch. I have been going there on occasion to see the Clydesdale horses since before we ever had kids. We went yesterday, again.

 They also have 2 ponies, a zebra and a donkey.

 The barn is historic, an Amish refurbished one.

Friends, Ethan and Camilla, came also.

 They are massive and SO friendly.

 Elina found the dogs, of course.
